Harmony and Peace
May 14 & 15, 2011

Cantabile's spring concert will explore the meaning of a life of peace – with self, with the Divine, with others. We will perform Ave Verum Corpus, by William Byrd; Beati Quorum Via, by Charles Villiers Stanford; This Marriage, by Eric Whitacre; Tournez, Tournez by Randall Stroope; All the Things You Are, arranged by Ward Swingle; and even something from PDQ Bach. Join us for these works and more – works that inspire and challenge us to create love and harmony in our own lives and the lives of others.

AUDITION FOR CANTABILE!

Thank you for your interest in Cantabile. For your audition you will be asked to sing any piece of music that you have prepared. It can be a simple song, such as a folk song, something like the National Anthem, or any well-known solo piece or aria. This song should exhibit as much of the musicality, range, flexibility, and color of your voice as possible. An accompanist will be provided if you wish. During the audition we will evaluate your vocal range. You will be asked to sing a series of pitch patterns you hear played on the piano, consisting of three or four pitches each. You will be asked to sight-read some simple musical patterns. Regarding sight reading, the ability to sight-read is not a requirement for membership, although it is highly desirable. Finally, we will be evaluating your general musicianship and performance skills.

Membership in Cantabile is "tenured" from the time a singer is accepted through the audition process until the next general re-auditions, which will occur approximately every several years. New voices can be auditioned upon request at any time, depending upon various factors such as size of the group and balance.

Cantabile offers an important format for many people who do not earn a living through their art, but who still want to use their talent and training to make music. The technical demands of presenting unfamiliar and often difficult repertoire, as well as the special requirement of learning a variety of music performance styles, challenges our members to grow musically. Although we are a community-based, volunteer organization, we adhere to high musical standards and ask that people who join us share our commitment to upholding those standards. Singers do not need to have had formal voice training, but excellent musical ability, a voice that will blend into the texture of the choir, and some facility in sight-reading are all essential. The main purpose of our rehearsals is to work on problems of ensemble, music interpretation and to blend and shape the music, not to learn the notes. Note learning is the responsibility of each choir member and must be done outside of regular rehearsals.

Thank you for your interest in Cantabile! We hope that your voice will be a good fit with our very special group. If we select you for membership, we hope you will feel that you have found a “home” for your personal musical talents, and a wonderful and fun “family” to share some amazing musical experiences with.
